Sign Materials – What Is Available For My Signs?

Believe it or not there are not a lot to choose from

Polly Metal which is aluminum bonded to 1/8″ thick resin with color on BOTH SIDES. Excellent for signs you want a background color for that are double sided like yard signs and front signs. A colored background makes the sign much more noticeable than a white background.

Fiberglass – Comes in several colors, 4 ft by 10 ft sheets, and is color all the way through. We use 0.090″ thick and shear it to size.

Expanded PVC – nice smooth finish and comes in many colors, good for interior signage and short term outdoor. Outdoor use is limited because it is not UV stable and will fade in a few months, also below zero temperatures will cause it to crack and break. The breakdown of the product by the sun will also cause white to crack and break in a year or so. Trade names as Sintra, Trovicel, Celtec and more.

Corogated Plastic – looks like cardboard but made from plastic. Comes in several colors but all will show the grapic on the back side as it is not totally opaque and the sun shines through it. White Opaque is totally opaque and this is what we use the most.   It is only a few dollars more per sheet so don’t let others fool you with the see thru sheets. This is what the signs on the T-Bars and H stands you see are made of by the side of the road. Notice you can “see through” most of them.

MDO – plywood – outdoor grade most common are 1/2″ and 3/4″ – we use mostly 1/2″ that comes factory primed and finished painted for the longest lasting product. With today’s paints even industrial marine and sign paint we use don’t expect more than 5 years from a painted sign.

Vinyl Covered MDO – mdo plywood with sign vinyl applied completely over the surface – good both side and good one side same as regular mdo. Needs to have plastic trim applied to the edges for a complete seal. Makes a nice durable sign with a self cleaning every time it rains slick finish.

Aluminum – most used is 0.032″ and 0.040″ for custom signs – street signs are usually 0.080″ – comes painted and in colors but color on both sides usually not available only white. Good material but dents easily and don’t drop it. Painted finish will “chalk” after a couple of years. Problem colors only on one side – white on other.

Aluminum covered MDO – aluminum sheeting applied to 1/4″ mdo plywood, comes in colors, 4ft by 8ft and 4ft by 10ft sheets. Still needs plastic trim for complet seal. Problem colors only on one side – white on other.

Painted exterior plywood – ok but expect paint to peal in a couple of years – also needs to be SMOOTH slick finish or vinyl letters will not stick to it.
